BEYOND THE LUNCHBOX

You know the drill ... dash out of class heading for the cafeteria. Wait in line for warmed-up pizza, burgers or chicken nuggets. Eat as fast as you can so you have time to catch up with your best friends before the bell signals a return to afternoon classes.

The scene is quite different at one urban middle school in Berkeley, California, home of the Edible Schoolyard. On a spot that used to be a parking lot there is a one-acre organic garden and kitchen classroom. The edible schoolyard has redesigned the way students think about and enjoy food, friends and the natural environment.
