costume design: 2d to 3d

How does a costume designer keep the original integrity of a character while updating it for a modern audience? The character of Spider-Man first appeared in August 1962 in a comic book published by Marvel Comics. Writer Stan Lee and illustrator Steve Ditco imagined a teen superhero who acquired amazing strength and spider-like behaviors after being bitten by a radioactive arachnid.

When the illustrated comic book character of Spider-Man sprang into action, he had the ability to shoot web-like strings from his wrists and cling to the surfaces of walls and buildings. The suit in new film The Amazing Spider-Man is inspired by the original drawings, but its high-performance fabric and construction brought to life what its creators could only imagine when the character appeared forty years ago.

Designer Kym Barret wanted to create a costume that would appear to elongate Spider-Man’s body and give him more of an acrobatic, spider-like appearance than previous versions. The downside of the new suit’s tight, acrobatic nature was that it took actor Andrew Garfield twenty minutes a day just to put it on!
